Chania, in the west of the
island, is situated on the minoan Kydonia and is one of the oldest
cities in Europe. The city impresses the visitor with large roads,
green parks, churches, museums and the beautiful old town with the
romantic venetian port and its famous lighthouse.
Beside the numerous
beaches at the North coast the prefecture of Chania offers many
recommendable trips like to the famous Samaria gorge at the Omalos
plateau inside the 2.500 metres high White Mountains, the Irini
gorge, the Imbros gorge and the Therisso gorge, many Byzantinian
monasteries at the peninsula of Akrotiri. Archaeological sites of
the Minoan, the Dorian and the Roman periods you can find in Aptera,
Polyrrinia, Falassarna, fortresses in Frangokastello as well as on
the islands of Gramvoussa and Souda, Caribbean seeming beaches in
Elafonissi in the southwest and Balos in the northwest, as well as
the resorts Paleochora and Sougia at the south coast and in the
north the long sandy beach of Georgioupolis with the Kournas lake,
the only natural lake of Crete, in the forest-rich district of
Apokoronas.

|
Rethymnon, developed from
the minoan city Rethymna, is perhaps beside Chania one the most
beautiful city of the island, with a large city park, an old town
with the large fortress, old houses, close lanes and the small
venetian port with its old lighthouse.
In the prefecture of
Rethymnon you should not miss to visit the historical monastery
Arkadi, the monastery Preveli and the beach of the same name with
its palm forest at the river floating to the Lybian Sea, the
minoischen graves of Armeni as well as the caves of Melidoni and
Zoniana. The fascinating water falls of the springs of Argiroupolis
and the springs of Spili are fascinating of Spili, on the way to the
nice place Agia Galini at the south coast.

Heraklion has countless

|
Agios Nikolaos, the
administrative seat of the Prefecture of Lassithi in the east of
Crete, situated at the beautifuls Mirabello bay. convenient well
known as the Venice of the east, while in its center there is a lake,
where according to mythology, the goddesses Athena and Aphrodite
used to bath.
The region has its name
from the plateau of Lassithi with its hundreds windmills, situated
in the Dikti mountains. Further cities in the region are Neapolis in
the middle, Sitia in the east at the north coast and Ierapetra at
the south cvoast. At the beach of Vai at the east coast you will be
surprised of the famous large palm forest, beside Preveli the only
one in Europe. There are also the ruins of the minoan palace of
Zakros. Likewise to recommend is the nice resort Elounda with the
peninsula Spinalonga and the venetian fortress on the close island
Kalidon.
